Jamaal Charles Returns In…The Wreck-A-Knee-Ing
The Kansas City Chiefs were a bit of a surprise when they won the AFC West in 2010 with a 10-6 record. One of the main reasons they were able to shock the league was the explosion of Jamaal Charles, who finished second in the league in rushing with 1,467 yards behind only Arian Foster. He finished the season averaging over six yards per carry while also catching 45 passes for 468 yards. Charles immediately put his name at the top of the “elite running backs” list in the NFL with his blazing speed, shifty moves, and ability to score every time he touched the ball. It looked like Charles was going to be the horse to carry Kansas City back to the top of the AFC West for years to come…but then 2011 happened and Charles tore his ACL during the first month of the season, effectively killing the Chiefs running game and their shot at repeating as AFC West champs. Well, good news Chiefs fans! Jamaal Charles is back…with a vengeance.
“When I touch that field again, you’re going to feel my pain,” Charles told the Kansas City Star. “You’re going to go through what I went through. It’s going to be that way for me the rest of my career.”
That is…intense. It sounds like he’s had First Blood and Rambo: First Blood Part II on constant loop during his rehab and now he’s coming back for revenge, inflicting his pain on defenses…which means he’s going to tear their ACLs, I guess? I’m pretty sure that this quote constitutes intent to injure and if there’s one thing we’ve learned this offseason with “Bounty-gate,” it’s that intentionally trying to hurt people is frowned upon by the league office. Luckily for Charles, though, he’s an offensive player, so they’re the ones who are protected. He could hack Jerome Harrison’s leg with a machete and Harrison would still be the one to get fined.
But isn’t all this anger and thirst for vengeance by Charles misplaced? He’s embarking on a one-man vendetta against NFL defenses to inflict the same pain on them that he went through in rehab…but it wasn’t NFL defense who hurt Jamaal Charles. If we remember back, Charles tore his ACL on a run out of bounds when he came down awkwardly after stepping on a yard marker and tweaking the knee. So really, Charles should be on a warpath to inflict pain on yard markers, presumably by diving out of bounds in the most aggressive manner possible. Granted, that isn’t going to do his team any favors in the win department, but it will make for an amusing visual. So, watch yourself yard markers cause Jamaal Charles is coming for you.
